Terms of Use & Disclaimer

Last updated: 15 June 2026

SeparationSense is a free planning tool that produces estimates only. Please read these terms — they explain what the tool is, what it isn’t, and the limits of what it can tell you.

Estimate only — not advice. SeparationSense does not provide financial product advice within the meaning of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), legal advice, or a Services Australia assessment. It does not take into account your personal objectives, full financial situation, or needs. Before making decisions, speak to a financial counsellor, a family lawyer, or Services Australia.

What the tool does

It models the financial picture of separation for both households — child support, each household’s cashflow, and government support — using published Australian rules. It is an educational and planning aid to help you understand the moving parts.

Child support estimates

Child support in Australia is assessed by Services Australia. The real assessment can differ from our estimate because of factors the tool can’t know or model fully — for example special or non-standard income (self-employment, overseas income, certain benefits), a Change of Assessment, additional or special expenses, dependants and multi-case situations, prior assessments, and minimum/fixed-rate rules. Treat our figure as a starting point, not a determination.

Family Tax Benefit & government support estimates

Family Tax Benefit and related payments depend on the income test, the Maintenance Income Test (child support received reduces FTB Part A), shared-care percentages, and annual reconciliation after you confirm your income. Some of our figures (currently Parenting Payment and Rent Assistance rates) are marked “≈” because the exact rates are still being confirmed against Services Australia. Always confirm entitlements with Services Australia.

Tax estimates

Take-home income uses a simplified estimate of resident income tax (FY 2025–26 rates, the Medicare levy and the Low Income Tax Offset). It excludes the compulsory HELP/HECS repayment (entered separately as a debt), the Medicare levy surcharge, and offsets beyond LITO.

No liability

SeparationSense is provided “as is”, without warranties. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or decision made in reliance on the estimates. Nothing in these terms excludes rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law.

Acceptable use

Use the tool for your own planning. Don’t rely on it as a substitute for professional advice or a formal assessment.
